Fall 2020 One Room Challenge, Week 1: The Plan

For my first-ever One Room Challenge project, I initially decided to go big. My plan was to complete our office/guest room, since it’s a space that’s gotten a lot of use lately, but if this year has taught me anything, it’s that I need to listen to my body and take note of what I actually have capacity for.

Our home office needs a lot of work and, frankly, will also require more money than I have saved right now. I like to keep things extremely real, and y’all, doing a total room makeover from scratch is just not in the cards for me right now. With that, I’m so excited to share that my ORC project is…

THE BEDROOM!

This is how our bedroom looks now. Pretty good! But not quite there.

I have lots of ~feelings~ about it. For one, it feels like our bedroom is sort of almost finished, and I resisted proclaiming this room as my project because I worried the reveal would be sort of lackluster. But, in the name of sharing real life stuff on the internet, I decided to just go with it. I have several small projects planned for the space that will collectively amount to a big impact and a few really wonderful brand partnerships lined up that I’m excited to share with you all.

Some of the pieces will definitely be staying, like the gorgeous wall-hung linen headboard from Norwegian Wood and the bed frame.

Here’s a rough mood board (or idea board, if you will) that outlines the overall vibe I hope to depict in the space:

The most notable change in the space will be to the built-ins. Our condo came without closets, and instead has these built-in wardrobes. They are fine, but the exterior is a fake wood veneer, which I don’t love. My plan for now is to prime and paint them, then add trim to make them look more finished. I am interested in incorporating some sort of radio-weave cane, but I’m not sure yet if I’ll go that route.

If you don’t already, be sure to follow me on Instagram! I’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes updates throughout the coming weeks.

The ORC is a biannual design event. Over the course of six weeks, participants share their process as they transform a room. If you love home decor like I do, you’ll probably also love this season’s ORC featured designers. A few of my absolute favorites from the list include Albie Baubeng, aka @albieknows and Austin and Alex from @hommeboys. I’m excited to peruse the ORC’s blog page, where guest participants (like me!) will link to their projects.

Lastly, this project is part of my return to blogging. I’m SO excited to share more long-form content with y’all. If you’d like to read some of my published work, head over to my writing page.
